Review
Like a lot of people, I was a little dissapinted to find out this was only the first two films in the trilogy, with not sign of The Battle of Five Armies ever getting released, but aside from the cliffhanger of the company pissing of a massive fuck off dragon, it didn't detract from my enjoyment.
The story levels were interesting, with multiple parts to them and a variety of typical Lego challenges. World exploration and free play were also satisfying. There was also a noticeable jump in graphics quality between Lego the Lord of the Rings and this game, mostly due to the Lego Hobbit being on the next generation of console.
I enjoyed the varied abilities each of the dwarves offered though there were a few repeats simply due to how many of them there were. That said, I did default to playing as Tauriel most of the time outside of story mode.
There were fewer fetch quests than in Lego the Lord of the Rings, which I liked, but it did make collecting all the level items a bit less satisfying. I enjoyed the fact there were quest lines to complete out in the world, with some of them necessary to unlock the red bricks. The blacksmithing mini game was more enjoyable than in Lord of the Rings' method of having you jump up and down on the bellows.
It did annoy me as a commuted Tolkien fan that they labeled the Grey Havens as "elven port" and Lothlorian as "elven wood." I know they're not central to the story but come on!
Overall I think I enjoyed Lego the Lord of the Rings more, but that's more to do with how I feel about the respective movies thsn it is the quality of the game. I did end up playing this to 100% completion, so make of that what you will.
